Why Listicles Still Work in AI Search

Listicles never stopped working. In AI search, structured roundups and ranked comparisons are easier for AI systems to extract, summarize and cite.

When AI search started surfacing direct answers instead of links, many assumptions about content formats stopped holding up. Listicles, in particular, had spent years being treated as low-value SEO content — the kind of format serious B2B brands were supposed to move beyond.

Not all list formats perform equally in AI search. For AI visibility and category positioning, three formats consistently do most of the work:

Best tools / best software lists

The “best X for Y” format is the closest match to how buyers actually search. But today’s quality bar is higher; AI systems and buyers can distinguish between a roundup that restates marketing copy and one built on real evaluation criteria and honest caveats.

As Copeman notes: "A genuinely useful B2B listicle goes beyond factual information. It includes actual comparatives, strengths and weaknesses, learning curves, use cases, case studies, statistical information and user feedback." 

Similarly, Cohen adds that the strongest-performing pages are those that “provide a complete and balanced overview of a category, rather than only promoting one vendor.”

“In my opinion, the main driver is how well the content explains the category,” Cohen explains. “If a page helps define what buyers should look for, compares tools in a consistent way, and gives enough context about who each tool is best for, it becomes more useful both for human readers and for AI systems trying to summarize the market.”

Vendor comparison roundups

Comparison roundups (X vs. Y vs. Z) align with high-intent queries at the evaluation stage. Third-party comparisons often carry more weight than brand-owned pages because they offer an external perspective.

As Copeman says, "We will do X vs. Y comparisons. We will say, what are this software's weak spots and strong points? What is this software better used for? We really try to dig into more granularity and provide information that helps someone make an educated decision about what software is the right fit for them.”

These pages perform best when they map directly to the criteria buyers are trying to validate:

  • Integration depth
  • Support quality and responsiveness
  • Pricing transparency
  • Ease of implementation for the team's existing stack

Use-case or vertical-specific recommended vendor lists

The more specific the context, the more precisely the list maps to real search behavior. While a general "best PRM" list serves a broad audience, a roundup post focused on fintech or PLG motions serves a defined segment with clearer needs. Segmentation improves both relevance and visibility in AI-generated answers.

Cohen reinforces the role of publishers in shaping category understanding: “SaaS companies naturally describe their products from their own point of view, but third-party publishers compare multiple vendors side by side and help define the broader market context.” This directly impacts search visibility, since most systems rely heavily on third-party structured content when forming answers.

The brands that show up most consistently in AI-generated answers understand where category narratives are shaped and how those narratives influence evaluation. 

“Visibility is the first step,” Cohen explains. “As publishers, we first need to know the brand exists. I have seen good examples of strong products that reached out to us, but before that outreach, I had never heard about them. SaaS companies should not underestimate the importance of visibility in their category and network.”

The problem isn’t the format; it’s shallow execution.

Listicles that restate marketing copy or rely on unclear ranking criteria fail both AI systems and human readers. This isn’t new — it simply becomes more visible in AI search environments where content is continuously compared and summarized.

As Copeman explains: “AI is looking for deeper analysis. Not just a features and benefits list or top level coverage of what the marketing says the software does. It is looking for use cases, users that have used the software, strengths, weaknesses and actual analysis.”

She adds that methodology is increasingly important: “You can also get penalized if there is not a testing methodology outlined. One of the things we do on our sites is get into the methodology of how we assess software. That helps give context to the results we are publishing.”

As AI systems become more selective, superficial content loses value. 

High-quality, method-driven analysis is what earns the right to be cited over time. The list content that will compound in value over the next few years is the list content that is genuinely useful to buyers.

When to avoid the list format

Listicles aren’t always the right structure. For complex or exploratory topics, forcing information into a ranked format reduces clarity.

For example, a nuanced analysis of a new go-to-market plan is probably not a listicle. Sometimes, empathy and experimentation are required to determine if a narrative or structured approach is best for your audience. 

The key distinction is intent: use lists when comparing bounded options under shared criteria. Use narrative when developing a point of view or explaining complexity. Treating listicles as an SEO tactic rather than a structural decision is where most low-quality content breaks down.
